General Information About Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport
Situated between Mamara and Birobuli Selatan villages, Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport serves as a primary entryway into Central Sulawesi. Upgrades were undertaken in 2014 in honor of Sayyid Idrus bin Salim Al-Jufri (1892-1969), an independence hero from Central Sulawesi who made an important contribution to Indonesian independence during WW2.
At present, this airport serves six airlines offering scheduled commercial flights on its concrete runway measuring 2,250 by 45 meters.
Komodo National Park in Indonesia's North Maluku province is easily accessible from here via several airlines that operate regular scheduled services to Komodo Island from this airport, making it an ideal starting point for visiting tourists as well as pilgrims preparing to perform Hajj. Additionally, pilgrims use it in advance of performing their hudud.
On 28 September 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the region surrounding an airport and resulted in a tsunami, which severely damaged its runway and taxi area, while also leading to soil liquefaction resulting in turning to mud underneath the runway.
Following the earthquake, several landslides and flash floods occurred, leaving behind waterlogged conditions which severely damaged the airport control tower, navigation systems, facilities, and control tower.
Rebuilt and reopened in April 2014, its replacement terminal replaced that which had been destroyed during the earthquake. A new apron has also been constructed and three aerobridges added to the main terminal building.
