General Information About San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport
General Information Whilst only two miles south of San Luis Obispo, SBP (McChesney Field) provides easy and cost-effective air travel to and from Central Coast cities. Three airlines provide eight routes connecting SBP to various other locations around the globe.
Airport facilities at Air San Luis include a terminal building, restaurant, hangars, flight school and related businesses such as Cessna parts dealer/maintenance shop as well as Air San Luis' aircraft management service.
What was once a commuter airport has evolved into a full-service destination. Situated off Highway 101 toward the south of San Luis Obispo, its prime location near Morrow Bay and Pismo Beach on one side and Los Padres National Forest on the other is ideal.
Passenger service began in 1988 with an FAA control tower and SkyWest Airlines, WestAir operating as United Express, and Wings West (later merged into American Eagle) flying commuter turboprops. Later Mesa Airlines introduced de Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8s for Phoenix and Las Vegas destinations while Delta Connection SkyWest/America West Express provided service in Salt Lake City via CRJ200s.
Today SBP is served by several airlines that provide nonstop flights to Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix; with several regional partners providing additional routes and services.
Recently approved by the Federal Aviation Administration is a $13.5 million runway rehabilitation project funded entirely through grants from FAA's Airport Improvement Program. Construction should start shortly.
