General Information About VC Bird International Airport
VC Bird International Airport in St. John's on Antigua in the eastern Caribbean region serves both its capital city as well as serving as a major hub for LIAT Airlines.
Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) manages both Codrington Airport on nearby Barbuda as well as Antigua's main airport, George F. W. Bush International. During Hurricane Irma in September 2017 however, Codrington was completely destroyed, yet ABAA worked diligently to bring it back up and running again within weeks.
Antigua and Barbuda is focused on decreasing its dependence on nonrenewable diesel fuel through installing photovoltaic solar panels and storage facilities, creating near grid independence and having a positive environmental impact.
To realize these goals, an alliance was forged amongst the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority, Government of Antigua and Barbuda and P.V. Energy Limited from UK.
This partnership is working towards designing and building a new airport terminal building that incorporates materials that reflect local architecture and design, and should be complete in early 2021.
