General Information About Kona International Airport
Kona International Airport (KOA), also formerly known as Keahole-Kona Airport, serves the island of Hawaii. Located in Kalaoa CDP of Hawaii County near Kailua-Kona town.
The Airport on Big Island serves most of western Hawaii and receives interisland, domestic, and international flights. This facility is operated by the State Government of Hawaii.
At an elevation of 47 feet (14 meters), this facility covers 2,700 acres (1,100 ha). There is one asphalt runway measuring 11,000 by 150 feet (3,353x 46 metres).
Since 1970, Kohala Airport has been part of an airport expansion plan that helped shift tourism away from East Hawaii towards West Hawaii. Today it provides service to North and South Kohala districts as well as areas on leeward sides of the island.
Ellison Onizuka was an Astronaut born and raised in Kona who died during Space Shuttle Challenger Flight 286. A small museum dedicated to him operates as part of Kona Terminal Complex for a fee.
