General Information About Kuujjuaq Airport
Kuujjuaq Airport (YVP), also known as Fort Chimo, is an underdeveloped (as designated by Canadian National Airports Policy) airport situated 1.5 nautical miles southwest of Kuujjuaq town in Quebec, Canada. This remote airport primarily serves several communities along Ungava Bay as well as over 4,000 visitors annually who come here for hunting and fishing activities as well as to enjoy remoter regions.
Kativik Regional Government owns and operates Kativik Airport with funding from Transport Canada as well as collecting a small landing and terminal building fee collected by KRG. It boasts an air terminal, flight service station, and aircraft servicing hangar.
At present, two asphalt runways measuring 6,000ft by 150ft can support medium to large aircraft for passenger and airfreight services. A C$2.5m facelift was conducted on the main runway to level its surface and prevent overcorwding.
To reflect and honor Inuit culture, the new airport terminal was constructed to resemble an Inuit kayak. Environmental-friendly features were integrated into its design, including reflective roofs and opening windows to provide ventilation during warm weather as well as thermosyphon pipes that keep the ground frozen below the building - saving energy and water usage.
The new terminal was planned around a central hall that serves as a public space and facilitates socialization between passengers and local communities. Furthermore, its sustainability and energy efficiency features include an expanded skylight in its main entrance canopy that acts as a ventilation system to keep temperatures comfortable year-round - keeping both summer heat away and winter warmth inside.
