General Information About McGhee Tyson Airport
McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa is a major air travel hub located 12 miles south of Knoxville and regularly services commercial airlines, air cargo carriers and military aviation operations.
East Tennessee Airport makes a substantial economic contribution, estimated at over one billion annually. Furthermore, its operations provide employment for local residents and businesses alike.
Charles McGhee Tyson was one such individual who helped shape it into what it is today, including being killed during World War I patrol duty and giving this field its current name in his memory.
Over time, improvements were made to the field, including its relocation from its 60-acre original location in 1930 to its current 351-acre property in 1935 and hosting an air show featuring planes dropping flowers in honor of an aviator. A dedication ceremony and air show was then hosted that August.
In 2009, TYS launched a runway rehabilitation project which quickly turned into an extensive modernization effort over several years. Over this timeframe, Runway 5L-23R was extended and renovated as part of this work process; an Instrument Landing System (ILS) was also installed during this work period.
