Importance-Performance Analysis of Yangyang International Airport

Yangyang International Airport is a small airport situated in Yangyang City of Gangwon Province. Established in 2001 as an alternative to Sokcho and Gangneung Airports, it now provides services to local areas in and around Yangyang.

At present, the airport boasts strong performance in cargo business. It boasts high air freighter capacity and extra slot capacity - both essential factors of logistics competitiveness - while boasting low airport costs compared to competing airports. Yet being small with relatively low traffic usage rates it still needs to improve its logistics competitiveness so as to attract more air cargo flights.

Importance-performance Analysis of Logistics Competitiveness Factors

This research seeks to identify which factors Yangyang International Airport could focus on when cultivating air cargo to reach higher levels of logistics competitiveness. We employed an "importance-performance analysis" technique, which looks at logistics competitiveness factors from stakeholders' viewpoint.

This methodology involves an analysis of actual evidence, as well as surveying relevant parties involved with airport logistics. More specifically, 36 experts experienced in air cargo forwarders, airport corporations, airline freight staffs, shipper companies export personnel, and customs agents were interviewed during this survey process.

Results show that Yangyang International Airport can improve its logistics competitiveness through factors like importers' presence, full freighter capacity, operational time and costs; conversely, factors that hinder Yangyang International airport are absent forwarders' presence, inability to provide services for foreign travelers and no defined strategy for attracting cargo passengers.
