Thunder Bay International Airport serves as an integral link in Canada's Northwestern Ontario region, connecting Thunder Bay, North Bay and other nearby communities with major centres across Canada and beyond.
Nav Canada has designated this airport of entry and it is staffed with Canada Border Services Agency officers capable of handling aircraft with up to 40 passengers. Furthermore, it serves as a major transit hub in northern Ontario.
Thunder Bay's runways are typically used by small to mid-sized turboprop and regional jet aircraft such as Bombardier Q400 propjets and the CRJ900 regional jet; however, they can accommodate narrow-body jetliners on charter or occasional services operated by Flair Airlines, Air Transat, Sunwing Airlines and WestJet.
Formerly, this facility routinely handled mainline jet aircraft such as Boeing 727-200s, Boeing 737-200s and McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30s; Fokker F28 Fellowship twin jets were also operated from this facility in its past life.
