General Information About Thunder Bay International Airport

Thunder Bay International Airport serves as an integral link in Canada's Northwestern Ontario region, connecting Thunder Bay, North Bay and other nearby communities with major centres across Canada and beyond.

Nav Canada has designated this airport of entry and it is staffed with Canada Border Services Agency officers capable of handling aircraft with up to 40 passengers. Furthermore, it serves as a major transit hub in northern Ontario.

Thunder Bay's runways are typically used by small to mid-sized turboprop and regional jet aircraft such as Bombardier Q400 propjets and the CRJ900 regional jet; however, they can accommodate narrow-body jetliners on charter or occasional services operated by Flair Airlines, Air Transat, Sunwing Airlines and WestJet.

Formerly, this facility routinely handled mainline jet aircraft such as Boeing 727-200s, Boeing 737-200s and McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30s; Fokker F28 Fellowship twin jets were also operated from this facility in its past life.

Thunder Bay International Airport Authority, a non-profit corporation, owns and operates the airport. Their board of directors comprises nine appointed members representing City, Chamber of Commerce, federal/provincial governments as well as labour interests.

As a member of the Canadian Airports Association (CABA), Toronto City Airport operates under a long-term lease agreement with Ontario government.

Thunder Bay Airport is home to two fixed-base operators, Innotech Aviation Services for Shell Aviation and Thunder Bay Flight Refuelling for World Fuel Services, both offering fixed-base operations that support domestic and international airlines providing flights across North America, Europe and Asia.
