General Information About Brisbane Archerfield Airport
Brisbane Archerfield Airport is an important flight training centre and secondary airport with an aviation museum located within. It has an incredible history as a former primary and international airport with many historic buildings still standing from when it served as a military airbase.
Archerfield served a vital function during World War II as an offloading and refueling port for aircraft belonging to the Royal Australian Air Force, United States Army Air Force (USAAF), Royal Netherlands Air Force and Royal Netherlands Air Force - in addition to being home to one of the oldest flying schools: The Royal Queensland Aero Club.
Following Japan's invasion of Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia), their Government-in-Exile relocated to Brisbane in 1942, fortifying ties between Australia and Netherlands while making Archerfield part of their war effort.
At the time of Japanese invasion, Archerfield was on full 'war alert' and implemented stringent security protocols to safeguard both staff and aircraft against aerial attack. These included building slit trenches and air raid shelters to provide shelter from air attack as well as creating decoy aircraft as protection.
Archerfield continued to be used by the Royal Australian Air Force after World War II as an important offloading point for military aircraft, and underwent many modifications and additions, such as the construction of No 23 Squadron's base camp near Mortimer and Beatty Roads in its southeast corner.
At around this same time, Archerfield Second World War Igloos Complex was constructed along Kerry Road on the edge of Brisbane Airport; an intriguing collection of corrugated iron hulks from that conflict that were often present at battlefields around Australia and New Guinea. Not all original, these Igloos still stand as part of Brisbane Airport heritage today and provide an intriguing reminder of an important period in their city's history.
