The Carrasco International Airport, known as MVD, is situated 11 miles (18 kilometers) east of Montevideo in Uruguay. As it offers year-round international connections and acts as the "front door" to many visitors coming into Uruguay, MVD holds great symbolic value as its "front door."
Puerta del Sur Airport's owner and operator commissioned Rafael Vinoly Architects PC to expand and modernize existing facilities with an airy new passenger terminal building designed to increase capacity to 4.5 million per year - helping spur commercial expansion and tourism throughout the region.
Rafael Vinoly's design solution for Carrasco International Airport embodies both modernity and regional influence in its conception of space, function, and structure. Its curvilinear form and low profile draw inspiration from Uruguay's coastal dunes while its monolithic roof takes strength from its relationship to surrounding topography.
Architecture for the new building proposes a two-story, double-decker facility featuring arrivals on the ground level and departures on the first floor, each served by its own vehicular access roads; additionally a public, landscaped terrace will occupy the top floor above departures level.
Interiors
The Arrivals Area features a fully glazed mezzanine level which helps passengers orient themselves to the terminal space prior to descending for immigration, baggage claim and customs processes. There are also various small gift, newspaper and book shops throughout the terminal building for added convenience.
