General Information About Hanimaadhoo International Airport
Situated on the island of Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Hanimaadhoo International Airport was initially opened as a domestic airport before converting to international status in 2012. There are two primary terminals: International Terminal and Domestic Terminal. Additionally, there is also a waterdrome seaplane terminal which caters for large seaplane operations, and houses the Hanimaadhoo Meteorological Observatory.
As construction for the new airport remains far off, attention has turned towards improving existing infrastructure. The GMCP project, touted as one of the biggest outside the Greater Male' region, will include a 2.46 km runway and stylish new terminal building.
Refurbishment costs will likely be the highest when renovating the terminal, along with plans for an air traffic control tower and multi-storey car park.
According to estimates, Maldives' new terminal and associated facilities will cost at least US$2 billion to construct and redevelop, with estimates suggesting it could help boost Maldives' international profile and tourism revenue as part of an ambitious plan to become self-sufficient by 2020.
