Norman Rogers International Airport
This airport is named in honor of Norman McLeod Rogers, former MP (Kingston City 1935-1940) who served in Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Cabinet as Minister for Labour and National Defence before tragically dying in a plane crash near Toronto while traveling from Ottawa for speaking engagements on June 10, 1940.
YGK Airport in Kingston is home to its sole public airport and features a Flight Service Station resembling a control tower, along with aircraft maintenance facilities. Situated on three sides by Lake Ontario, its approaches make for some of the finest approaches in the region.
Expansion of Terminal Building
The terminal expansion aims to reconnect YGK passenger experience with nature through expansive and flexible spaces that foster inviting views of nature, the runway, apron and deplaning area. A visitor veranda, Passenger Pavilion and Arrivals Hall enhance views to the south while strengthening access to views of both apron and deplaning area on the north.
Limestone Wall Wrought From Local Kingston Limestone, Groen and his team constructed primary walls that define public and service areas at Kingston Airport, helping organize daily operations as well as acting as guides for future expansion of this airport.
Runway Extensions
In order to extend the primary runway at an airport, project designers extended its asphalt surface from 5,000 feet long to 6,000 feet using 200,000 tons of new granular material.
