Kodiak Airport - Environmental Issues and Runway Safety Area Regulations
General Details Its Kodiak Airport is a regional airport on Kodiak Island in Alaska that is operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and serviced by two airlines, Ravn Alaska and Alaska Airlines.
General Flight Schedules | Kodiak Kodiak is home to one of Alaska's premier fishing ports: the Port of Kodiak - home to more than 770 commercial fishermen who provide cod, pollock, rockfish, halibut, black cod and crab year-round. Additionally, this port serves as a bustling business community and transportation hub serving southwest Alaska.
Environment Issues and Runway Safety Area Regulations With limited land resources and as FAA standards shifted, runway safety became an increasing issue at this airport. Unfortunately, two of its runway ends were blocked from creating standard Runway Safety Areas due to natural barriers which prevented standard Runway Safety Areas being established.
Kiewit partnered with Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) to craft an environmental solution and meet safe flight operations requirements for this airport project. Their unique approach to runway safety area protection involved installing EMAS at two of the runway ends as part of an in-depth environmental study process.
Large armor stones - each weighing roughly 12,000 pounds - allowed crews to safely install fill without worrying about it shifting once installed. These natural rocks were mined in Wrangell Harbor in southeast Alaska before being transported across the Gulf of Alaska by barge to Kodiak for shipping and installation.
