Kumasi International Airport is Ghana's second international airport after Kotoka International Airport in Accra and represents a significant development for Ashanti Region of Ghana. Serving as both domestic and international air traffic hub, this airport acts as the main gateway to visiting Kumasi city as well as being its primary gateway for tourist visitors.
Kumasi International Airport may be small in size, but its daily operation proves its success. On December 18, President John Dramani Mahama made a historic first-night landing there to inaugurate phase 1 of its upgrade project.
As part of a multi-modal transportation system being established by the government to enhance tourism in Ashanti Region, Kumasi International Airport will undergo an ambitious expansion. The planned work aims to expand capacity so as to serve one million passengers annually.
This expansion will increase tourism in Ashanti Region while creating jobs by providing more facilities for airlines and airport staff to use. The project is scheduled for completion within 24 months.
Kumasi International Airport's new terminal will feature an array of passenger facilities including lounges, restaurants, shops and more - as well as being directly linked with both runway and taxiway for seamless travel experience.
Hassan Tampuli, the Deputy Minister in Charge of Aviation has confirmed this fact and encouraged other airlines to consider providing charter and scheduled flights directly from their bases to Kumasi International Airport when it opens for service this year.
