Lynchburg Regional Airport
General Description (LYH)
Lynchburg Regional Airport is a public use airport situated at the junction of Route 29 South and US 460 five nautical miles southwest of Lynchburg's central business district and managed by its city government.
Lynchburg International Airport (LYH), is a full-service Part 139 airport that services four counties surrounding Lynchburg. Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell Counties make up its primary catchment area, with four surrounding Counties of Prince Edward, Charlotte Halifax and Pittsylvania considered secondary catchment areas.
Lynchburg Regional Airport Commission was formed in 1990 to manage the airport. Comprised of nine members - five residents of Lynchburg, three from Central Virginia (Amherst, Appomattox and Bedford counties), and the last as representative from Lynchburg City Manager or his or her appointed representative - its membership represents all areas surrounding Lynchburg.
As of 2019, Lynchburg Regional Airport Commission is undertaking steps to become an independent authority, with approval from City County and a change to operating license by FAA. This move is intended to make management more efficient while recruiting more carriers or expanding destinations offered at its airport.
There are only a handful of domestic flights departing the airport each day, primarily those operated by American Airlines using both CRJ200s and CRJ700s for six daily departures.
Liberty University School of Aeronautics relies heavily on general aviation traffic for flight operations and maintenance at their School of Aeronautics. Freedom Aviation provides full-service fixed base operator facilities at this airport with fueling, hangar storage, maintenance services, avionics services and flight training among its services offered.
