Manda Airport, situated within Lamu Archipelago on Kenya's western coastline near Indian Ocean, lies some 450 kilometres southeast of Nairobi International Airport - Kenya's primary civilian airport.

Following the January 2020 attack at Cooperative Security Location Manda Bay in Kenya that resulted in three U.S. service members' deaths and damaged or destroyed aircraft, Africom commander Gen. Steve Townsend conducted an initial investigation. A subsequent independent review by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' team identified no single point of failure within Africom but agreed with Africom on the factors which contributed to death or property loss or damage as per Africom's findings.

Africom has also instituted changes to security at Manda Bay and Camp Simba, including increased focus on potential threats and force protection at multiple levels, more realistic training scenarios based on real-world threat information, increased Kenyan participation in security operations and strengthening communication capabilities. Furthermore, Air Force Director of Security Forces made modifications in how security forces troops are prepared for missions within Africom's area of responsibility.
