General Information About McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport
McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport is situated four nautical miles west of Jackson in Madison County, Tennessee and owned and managed jointly by both city and county government bodies. It primarily caters to general aviation aircraft.
At its location at the junction of State Highways 331 and 375, this airport serves Southern Airways Express under its Essential Air Service program.
The airport remains open year-round with only limited periods in which snow or ice cover its runways, usually due to storms. In wintertime it receives substantial amounts of precipitation as storms deliver considerable rain storms across its footprint.
In April 1942, the airport was leased by the United States Army Air Forces as a wartime flight training school under their Southeast Training Center (later Eastern Flying Training Command) as a wartime flight training school using PT-17 Stearman biplanes for flight training purposes.
A consolidated mess hall was located in the central area of the terminal along with administrative buildings, quarters for officers and enlisted men, quarters for service clubs, quarters for officers and quarters for quarters for officers as well as quarters for service clubs - with all these services serving nearby customers as a Service Club.
As of July 2010, the airport is still used for flight training by the Tennessee Army National Guard's 1/230th Air Cavalry Squadron and their UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters.
