Tutuila Island Airport in American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States located 18 degrees south of the equator, forms part of a group of seven islands (American Samoa, Manu's Islands Group, Rose Atoll, Aunu'u and Swains Islands). Originally built as a World War II military airfield and later renovated for civilian use after major reconstruction in 1963.
History Tafuna Airfield began offering commercial air service in 1946 when Pan American Airways initiated transpacific service between Honolulu and Canton Island, Australia (later Sydney) via Douglas DC-4 aircraft. Subsequently, several airlines also provided trans-pacific flights via Pago Pago to New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti.
At that time, Pago Pago was used for interisland flights within Samoan Islands until 1984 when Faleolo International Airport in Independent Samoa extended their runway in order to accommodate larger jet aircraft and international air traffic began growing significantly.
