Rupsi Airport was constructed during World War II by the British Empire of India between 1935 and 1943-45 as they supplied arms, manpower and ammunitions to fight Axis forces. Since its construction, Rupsi has provided Assam residents with domestic flights.

Re-development work began at Rupsi Airport under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) in September 2019 after receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Spread over 337 acres, its newly developed Rupsi Airport features a terminal building measuring 3,500 sq m with 10 check-in counters; designed to accommodate approximately 200 passengers during peak hours according to AAI sources.
