General Information About Sesriem in Namibia

Sesriem marks the gateway to Namibia's vast desert wilderness, featuring one of the world's most iconic dunes and an incredible canyon formed over millennia by Tsauchab River. Early Afrikaans explorers named it Sesriem after its dramatic beauty was first admired; best explored on foot or vehicle (parking facilities can be found near its entrance).

Sossusvlei lies 66 km past Sesriem gate and is a salt pan dotted with sand dunes topped by a crust of white, dry sand. When its clay pan floods from underground or intermittent rivers, it provides shelter to many forms of wildlife in an otherwise harsh environment, providing refuge to birds, vultures, lizards and other forms of life that find no other homes nearby.

Dune 45, located approximately 44 kilometers from Sesriem Campsite gate and boasting an 85-metre height, provides visitors with stunning views of Vlei. This popular viewpoint allows guests to capture images of salt pans and surrounding dunes.

Sesriem provides an ideal location for excursions to Sossusvlei Dunes and Elim Dune nearby, which can be driven to directly from the campsite and arrived at early enough in the day to catch sunrise or sunset views of these striking natural wonders.

Over billions of years, these dune dunes were formed by wind and rain over billions of years. The walls of Sesriem Canyon have preserved this unique history by recording climate changes ranging from dry periods to periods when more water was available - providing a fascinating look back into this remarkable place's fascinating story.
