Jakarta's primary airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK or Cengkareng Airport), commonly referred to by locals as SHIA is situated 12.5 miles northwest of its city centre on Java Island.
Named for Indonesia's first President Soekarno and Vice-President Mohammad Hatta, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport opened in 1985 as a replacement to Kemayoran Airport in Central Jakarta and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in East Jakarta. Today it operates at more than twice its planned capacity - one of Asia's busiest airports!
Terminals
Soekarno-Hatta International airport features three individual terminal buildings. Terminal 1 and 2, built during the early 90s, are set to open their doors in 2016. Terminal 3 is scheduled to be complete by 2016.
Terminals feature a blend of traditional joglo Javanese architecture and modern, eco-friendly design elements. Tropical gardens fill spaces between Javanese-inspired pendopo waiting and boarding pavilions.
