Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) is a medium sized airport situated eight kilometres outside Kota Bharu city center and close to Thailand. Formerly used by the Royal Air Force base during World War 2, KBR was converted to civilian use after the Second World War as part of an airport expansion program.
The new terminal opened in 2002 and features all of the amenities found at modern airports - shops, car rental, restaurants, etc. Additionally, upgrades were conducted again in 2016 as apron expansion and runway/taxiway enlargement are currently under way.
