General Information About Waco Regional Airport
Waco Regional Airport began life as Blackland Army Airfield, constructed by the Army for pilot training during World War II. Known for its name derived from local black soil, flights began operating here as early as 1942.
After World War II ended, it was leased by the city of Waco and transformed into Waco Municipal Airport. Braniff Airlines provided passenger service first before Pioneer Airlines took over later.
Trans-Texas Airway became the sole airline serving Waco in 1955; however, their monopoly only lasted eleven years due to strikes temporarily disrupting services.
In the 1960s, the airport underwent significant transformation into a multi-use facility, adding amenities such as a shooting range for rifle and pistol shooting, soap box derby race track and the Central Texas Zoological Park.
Deregulation in the 1970s disrupted commercial air service at Madison Cooper Airport, leading to passenger numbers declining significantly. Following its renaming as Madison Cooper Airport in 1980 and Continental Airlines purchasing it later that year, Madison Cooper served as Continental's main base before United purchased them in 2012.
