General Information About John Murtha Johnstown?Cambria County Airpor
This airport can be found three miles northeast of Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania and is owned and managed by the Johnstown-Cambria County Airport Authority; it was named in memory of late Congressman John Murtha (deceased).
At present, Johnstown is served by United Express' Essential Air Service (EAS). This carrier receives subsidies from the Federal Aviation Administration and operates Colgan Air Saab 340 aircraft between Johnstown, Altoona, Washington-Dulles (IAD), and DuBois.
As soon as Spirit Airlines suspended or discontinued flights to Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach in Florida as well as Myrtle Beach in South Carolina from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport near Latrobe, its owners saw an opportunity to promote United Express service from Arnold Palmer.
Johnstown Airport would become home for the 258th Air Traffic Control Squadron of Pennsylvania National Guard, established in 1982 but originally planned for relocation elsewhere; they have since remained at Johnstown airport for over 20 years.
In 1999, a state-of-the-art $6 million tower was constructed to meet the challenges associated with storing, trafficking and refueling C-5 Galaxy and C-9 Skytrain cargo aircraft used by the Guard's 70 member unit. The facility featured classrooms, maintenance shops and offices.
Airports have also received economic stimulus funds from the government. While taxpayer watchdogs claim this money may help make airports "shovel-ready", it doesn't always yield multiple dividends for their investments.
