General Information About Prince George Airport
Prince George Airport is conveniently situated along the North Pacific Corridor and Great Circle air routing - integral components of Asia Pacific Gateway connecting Asian economies with North American economies. As an alternate hub airport gateway in Canada for transpacific carriers flying trans-pacific routes, it also forms an essential link in Northwest Logistics Corridor network.
2007 saw the completion of an ambitious expansion project - increasing runway length to 11,500 feet, making it Canada's third-longest commercial runway, following Vancouver and Calgary. This was accomplished with funding provided through an $11 million loan from Northern Development as well as private investments of $12 million.
The runway expansion project at Edmonton International was intended to help the airport meet its goal of becoming an Asian cargo and distribution hub, with as many as 15,000 fuel stop landings annually. This would facilitate moving many air traffic operations away from Edmonton Municipal while increasing passenger flight frequencies even further.
As part of North American Logistics Corridor, Prince Rupert Airport will become a key component. Connected directly to CN Rail intermodal facility at Prince Rupert and beyond, its proximity is further strengthened by its position along the Boundary Road Connector, creating a transport route for future development of its specialized logistics park.
This 25,000 square-foot multi-tenant cargo cross-dock facility will be located adjacent to the airport's north end fueling apron and will offer cargo storage and inspection, equipment staging for north end aircraft operations, as well as local economic benefits. We expect its completion and begin operations by 2012!
