Initial Recruit Training at 1RTU
The Royal Australian Air Force boasts numerous training establishments around Australia, with most offering Phase 1 Initial Recruit Training to all new male and female recruits into its ranks. This provides all new male and female recruits with basic military attitudes, skills, and knowledge (ASK) needed for them to become productive members of RAAF - before recently this training was conducted at various locations nationwide.
In 1954, an important change took place with the establishment of 1RTU; for the first time all initial training for male recruits was centralized into one location. Since that time it has grown significantly within RAAF and currently delivers two-thirds of its new recruits annually.
OTS (Officers' Training Squadrons) is responsible for equipping Royal Australian Air Force officers for careers by teaching leadership, communication, decision making and management skills. OTS is the oldest and largest of RAAF training establishments and currently delivers approximately 200 students yearly on its 17-week Initial Officer Course (IOC).
