In 1927, Allan Hancock Field was established at a different location between Jones Street in the north, Stowell Road in the south, Bradley Road to its east, and Miller Street on its western border. At that time it hosted Allan Hancock College of Aeronautics which was managed by Hancock Foundation of Aeronautics; later used by University of Southern California for their 4-year Aeronautics Degree program.

Flights into and from SMX

In 1933, Pacific Seaboard Air Lines was the inaugural carrier at Santa Maria Airport (SMX). Operating two daily round trip flights using single engine Bellanca CH-300s from Los Angeles-Oxnard-Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles-Monterey-Salinas-San Jose - San Francisco via Oxnard, Santa Barbara-Santa Maria- San Luis Obispo- Los Angeles-Oxnard-Oxnard-Santa Barbara- Santa Maria- San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles-Monterey-Monterey-Monterey-Monterey-PascaDter subsequently changed into Chicago and Southern Air Lines which eventually changed into Delta Air Lines which eventually acquired and merged with Delta.

Other airlines servicing the airport during that era included Southwest in the 1960s; later changing to Pacific Air Lines under new ownership and operating Martin 4-0-4 prop aircraft and Fairchild F-27 turboprops to serve the airport at that time. Pacific eventually merged with Bonanza Air Lines and West Coast Airlines to form Air West before becoming Hughes Airwest later on.
