General Information About William P Hobby Airport
Houston Hobby Airport, one of Houston's major air gateways and secondary commercial airports, serves domestic and international flights from its location 7 miles (11km) south of Downtown Houston in Texas.
History mes Houston Municipal Airport first opened as W.T. Carter Field in 1927 as a private airfield owned by W.T. Carter himself; when purchased by the city in 1937 and renamed it Houston Municipal Airport. By 1940s however, its nickname changed to Howard Hughes Airport due to him providing much of its funding.
During the 1950s, Houston was advised by the Civil Aeronautics Administration to initiate planning for another airport. Eventually 6,000 acres north of downtown were purchased and construction on Houston Intercontinental Airport started in earnest.
At that time, the airport boasted two terminals and served over 2 million passengers annually; however, by 1969 the demand for parking and boarding-gate space had outgrown the limited facilities at the airport.
As a result, Houston Intercontinental Airport was opened north of Houston in 1969 to accommodate most scheduled flights in Houston; some domestic carriers continued operating from Hobby until 1971, when they relocated their services to IAH.
