General Information About King Abdulaziz International Airport
King Abdulaziz International Airport (IATA: JED, ICAO: OEJN) is an international airport situated 19 km to the north of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Dedicated in 1981 in honour of Saudi Arabia's founding King Abdulaziz Al Saud, its name honors him and its opening marks 34 years since it opened for service.
Saudia operates out of this airport as its main hub, while it also acts as the entryway into Saudi Arabia for many pilgrims traveling to Mecca or Medina to perform umrah pilgrimages.
King Abdulaziz International Airport is undertaking an expansion project to increase capacity, comfort and service levels for passengers. It includes the construction of a new passenger terminal capable of accommodating an A380 aircraft; an upgraded baggage handling system; and multimodal transport hub.
The airport is currently undergoing upgrades to its existing facilities and airfield systems, including improvements to runways, taxiways and ground lighting. Its expansion will take place over three stages starting with 30-million passenger years before continuing with 60 million and 80 million passenger years respectively until completion by 2035.
KAIA expansion project began in September 2000; however, due to its complexity and challenges in obtaining funding, the first phase took longer than usual to start up. Due to these factors, some main construction activities were postponed until 2003.
