General Information About Tweed New Haven Airport
Tweed New Haven Airport, three miles southeast of Downtown New Haven in Connecticut, is owned and managed by both cities; East Haven is included as one of these municipalities in the Federal Aviation Administration's 2017-2021 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.
Current Schedule and Flights
Avelo Airlines, which currently services Tweed, utilizes full-size Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 jets to serve six Florida locations with four more scheduled to start service starting May. In its initial three months of operations, Avelo carried over 70,000 customers on more than 600 flights between New Haven and Florida.
Avelo's Managing Director, Dan Levy, recently announced plans for hiring 100 employees to support its expansion at Tweed Airport. In addition, Avelo also intends to extend runway length while building an East Haven terminal on airport.
Tweed has a rich legacy of air service. At first, fixed base operators provided service using de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters and Embraer EMB-110 Brasilia turboprop aircraft to Philadelphia, Baltimore/Washington International Airport and Washington National Airports.
In 1980, New Haven launched NewAir as a fixed base operator, providing direct nonstop service between JFK and LaGuardia Airports as well as Philadelphia and Baltimore/Washington International airports.
Since then, the city has also become involved with various aviation-related projects. A proposed $70 million to $100 million expansion project that would extend runway by over 1,000 feet and add a terminal on East Haven side is met with opposition from various stakeholders, who voice various complaints such as noise pollution, traffic issues, flooding issues and aircraft exhaust emissions.
