Airline Routes and Fares from 1978 to 1989

In 1978, when the United States unregulated its airline industry, drastic changes occurred within it. Large "trunk" carriers began dropping many regional routes, leaving smaller "local service" airlines an opportunity to fill this void.

As an answer to the situation, airline managements sought stability and profitability by merging six airlines between 1986 and 1989 into what are known today as "legacy carriers", including American, United, Delta Continental Northwest USAir (and USAir).

Aircrafts from 1960 to 1978: Terminal and runway expansion helped Rochester keep pace with its expanding economy in the early 1960s. Monroe County constructed new gate areas and baggage claims for American, followed by another ticketing and baggage facility for United.

In the 1980s, Rochester experienced an explosion of regional and commuter jet service from both East Coast and European carriers. A number of airlines were established; some lasting only for a short period before folding or filing bankruptcy; this created an array of aircraft types and liveries including hybrid aircraft as well as Boeing 727-100s sporting their signature "AstroJet" livery.
