Its main competitor is Interjet which was founded in 2008 by Grupo Aeroméxico SAB de CV (Grupo Aeromexico).

As of January 2019, it also operates flights to 58 destinations in Mexico and the United States. Aeromexico's route network focuses on Latin America and North America. It was founded during World War II as Compania Mexicana de Aviacion (CMA) by Ernesto Baeza Garcia and nine other investors who used their personal aircraft to begin air services from Mexico City to Guadalajara. In 1946 it began flying domestically within Mexico; soon after international flights were added.

In 1988 CMA was privatized by President Carlos Salinas de Gortari; however, it continued to operate as a state-owned enterprise until 1994 when it became part of Grupo Aeromexico SAB de CV. On May 17th 1994, Grupo Aeromexico SAB acquired 100% ownership interest from CMA shareholders.
